Coming Soon: The Use Every Scrap Knitalong

Summer has finally arrived in Frome! It’s only due to last until the weekend, but it has trigged my annual desire to cast on for socks. Every. Year. Without. Fail. The weather gets even a little bit warm, and I cast on for socks. It’s the rules.

This year I thought it would be fun to do a knitalong to show you how to make a pair of socks that uses every scrap of yarn. This is the method I used to make the fabulous striping pair above.

There are any number of possible yarn options available… This will be the perfect recipe to use every scrap of a skein of really precious yarn. Whether it’s a souvenir yarn from a past holiday or yarn show, or a fancy treat skein of self-striping yarn. Ahem. You can also gather together 100g worth of scraps of leftover sock yarn and use up every scrap of them. The choice is totally yours! I may even make both (although that might be a bit optimistic given the other projects I have with deadlines)… This knitalong is going to work brilliantly for any thickness of sock yarn, so if you’ve got some sport weight yarn, or DK that will work just as well as a classic 4ply (US fingering) weight sock yarn.

When?

The knitalong will run through August and September with weekly to fortnightly blog posts giving you all the instructions and video tutorials that you need to learn how to knit socks that use every scrap. The pace will be leisurely – it’s summer here in the northern hemisphere, so we are taking things easy-ish.

What equipment do I need?

Sufficient yarn to knit a pair of socks. Needles suitable for the yarn you select. If you have two sets you can work on both socks almost at the same time. We will do a deep dive into the details in next week’s post.

How do I join the knitalong?

We will be knitting along with each other in The Knitalong Hub, so you can post progress pictures and questions over in the dedicated Use Every Scrap KAL topic. You can also follow the #UseEveryScrapKAL hashtag on Instagram, and post your progress there, by including the hashtag in the caption for your image.

Let us know in the comments if you’re in! (If you are reading this on our email service, you’ll need to click the link below to “Read in browser” in order to leave a comment.)

I’ll be back next week to show you how to prepare your yarn, and work out your gauge. If you need some sock yarn stash enhancement, you will find all of our sock yarns in our online shop here: Sock Yarn Temptation

Every purchase from our online shop supports us in making advert-free video tutorials for you!
