If you haven't come across this little method for keeping track of your knitting yet, you'll ask yourself, "Why didn't I think of that? It's so simple!" While we've shown this for working in the round, you could just as easily use this technique working flat.

If you need to keep a record of how many rounds you've worked, all you need is some waste yarn. We tend to use white mercerised cotton as it is smooth, so won't get caught up in the fibres of the working yarn, and it stands out pretty well against most backgrounds. Simply changing at regular intervals which side of your work the waste yarn lies takes the uncertainty out of counting every round individually. If you're anything like me, once there are more than a dozen or so, the slightest distraction means starting again, so this will save you time and keep your blood pressure down.
